The Public Screening and Awards Presentation of the 21st Annual Maine Student Film and Video Festival will be held Saturday, July 11, 1998, at 10AM at Railroad Square Cinema, Waterville, ME. The screening is free and open to the public. This screening of finalist and winning movies is held in conjunction with the Maine International Film Festival.

MSFVF which is open to Maine residents 19 years of age and younger, received 26 entries from students in grades K - 12 representing all parts of Maine. The movies submitted to the Festival are judged on the basis of originality, content, style, and technique. Movies are reviewed by categories: Pre-Teen Division, grades K - 6; Junior Division, grades 7 - 9; and Senior Division, grades 10 - 12.

This year 2 Grand Prize winners were selected from the Senior Division. They are Seth Aylmer of Union and James Cole of Windham. Seth Aylmer is the recipient of a scholarship to the International Film and Television Workshops in Rockport. An excerpt from his film Pandemonium Spurs will be shown on July 11. The IFTVW scholarship is worth $1400 for a two week course for young filmmakers held this summer. James Cole's film, Jekyll, has been honored by being selected for screening as part of the Maine International Film Festival on Tuesday, July 14 at 3PM at Railroad Square Cinema. An excerpt from Jekyll will be shown at the July 11 Awards Presentation. Cole was the grand prize winner in last year's MSFVF and the IFTVW scholarship recipient for 1997.

Judges for the 21st Festival were: Suzanne Goulet, art teacher, Waterville High School, Waterville; Stu Silverstein, co-owner Railroad Square Cinema, owner Grand Central Cafe, and filmmaker, Waterville; Cathy Tower, past Maine Student Film & Video Festival winner, and 4th grade teacher, Fairmount School, Bangor. The Festival's director is Huey, an independent filmmaker and member of the Maine Touring Artists Program from Portland.
