Orpheus recorded in performance

1973

Odean Pope, music director
Farel Johnson, drum master

As I recall, Arthur Hall's 1/4" analog recording of Orpheus was on a distressed tape
that was shredding the magnetic emulsion as it passed over the playback head, building up
until the sound broke up. It took nine tries to get the whole tape to a 1/4" Preservation Master
and a digital CD reference copy. The nine files are embedded here.

The original 1/4" tape and the 1/4" Preservation Master are now in the Arthur Hall
Collection in the Special Collections Research Center, Temple University Libraries,
Philadelphia, PA.

At the time, I was working as the preservation specialist at the Northeast Archive of
Folklore and Oral Histories at the University of Maine in Orono.
